Department of Justice
Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS)
Technical Assistance and Training project
The SS/HS initiative was a grant program funded by three federal agencies: The U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Justice. From 1999 to 2012, school districts across the nation received SS/HS grants, each of which required the district to collaborate with their local juvenile justice agency, law enforcement (city police and/or county sheriff), and the local mental health authority. SS/HS projects also typically involved a variety of community- based organizations. After serving as the local evaluator for several SS/HS grantees, PRE was contracted by the federal government to provide evaluation technical assistance and training to more than 200 SS/HS grantees over a period of seven years. Under this contract, PRE conducted national and regional trainings which addressed topics such as evaluation design, logic model development, data analysis, reporting, and program sustainability. Targeted technical assistance was offered to individual sites with specific technical assistance needs regarding their local evaluation.
